A late Victorian mahogany longcase regulator
Thomas Armstrong & Brother, Manchester, No. 470. Circa 1900
The arched case with glazed panels to the sides and mirrored backboard, viewing door to the top, on plinth with panelled front, canted angles and raised on bracket feet, with foliate carved apron and silvered sight ring to 12 in. (30.5 cm.) diameter silvered and and engraved regulator dial, signed THOS. ARMSTRONG & BRO. MANCHESTER NO.470, blued steel hands, the substantial eight day movement with fully spot-finished plates joined by five back-screwed pillars, wheels with six crossings, maintaining power, Vulliamy-type dead beat escapement with jewelled pallets, indirect wind from right side, the steel rod mercury jar pendulum (mercury removed) with calibrated rating nut, swinging against a silvered beatscale; brass weight, crank key, two case keys
