A SOUTH GERMAN INLAID CARTRIDGE-BOX (PATRON)
Circa 1580-90
With wooden body of plano-convex section drilled for four cartridges, the interior fitted with a brass plate reinforcing the apertures, the outer surface decorated with a pair of panels inlaid with engraved horn ball-flower ornament, involving pairs of spiral tendrils linked by a single rosette, the remaining body almost completely encased in russet iron, including flanged base and spring-actuated hinged lid, and with three loops for suspension.
