A RARE GERMAN EMBOSSED IRON CARTRIDGE-BOX (PATRON)
Circa 1580-90
Possibly Nuremberg, with wooden body of plano-convex section drilled for five cartridges, the interior fitted with a brass plate reinforcing the apertures, the body almost entirely encased in blackened iron embossed with a pattern of nodular rosettes and lines on a ground of minute nodules, with spring-actuated hinged lid secured by a button catch, the base formed with a pronounced down-turned flange, the underside retaining its original leather covering, and the back slotted twice for a strap and fitted with single loop for suspension.
