A NORTH ITALIAN CUIR-BOUILLI POWDER-FLASK
Circa 1570
Of plano-convex section with strongly pronounced bulbous base, the inner-face covered in plain leather, the outer-face cut with a series of fluted panels filled with fantastic beasts, including a pair of lions supporting a vacant escutcheon below the top, another pair in combat with a stallion at the centre and a winged monster at either side, all in low relief on a stippled ground, and all within laurel and dentil moulded borders, bound with a fluted band about the base, fitted with iron top with incised nozzle and spring cut-off, belt hook, and the iron parts russet patinated throughout.
