A FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR COLONIAL ENGRAVED MAP POWDER-HORN
Of cowhorn with recessed three-stage nozzle with baluster collar and lipped tip, the body engraved with a map of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers from New York City to Lake Ontario, detailing settlements and twelve forts including Crown Point, the latter represented in its pentagonal form as rebuilt in 1760, with a compass, ships, an Indian scout, a soldier, the pre-1801 British royal arms, and a trophy-of-arms all heightened in red and blue pigment, inscribed 'Michael Keyser', and with unpierced extension lobe at the base (basal plug missing).

Lot Essay

One Michael Keyser served in a United States company of militia commanded by Captain John Keyser from May 1776-1778, when he was made a prisoner of war. Further biographical details are available on request.
