A GERMAN FLINTLOCK FOWLING-PIECE BY S.HOFFMAN A BAYREUTH
Circa 1725-30
In the Parisian fashion, with signed sighted barrel formed in two stages with turned girdle engraved with a band of leaves and the breech engraved with strapwork forming arched panels, engraved tang, signed bevelled lock with engraved borders en suite with the barrel tang and with stepped tail engraved en suite with the breech, carved moulded figured walnut full stock decorated with rococo scrolls and shells in low relief about the barrel tang and ramrod-pipe, the butt with raised cheek-piece also carved en rocailles at either end, full brass mounts cast in low relief and with engraved borders matching the lock, including butt-plate decorated with trophies and a grotesque mask, bevelled scrolling side-plate and three faceted ramrod-pipes, horn fore-end cap, iron sling-swivels, and horn tipped wooden ramrod.
