A FINE PAIR OF SCOTTISH ALL-STEEL FLINTLOCK BELT PISTOLS BY ALEXANDER CAMPBELL
Mid-18th Century
Each with three-stage barrel with flared octagonal muzzle, fluted breech and engraved with characteristic panels of scrollwork, engraved bevelled lock signed 'Alex r Campbell' decorated en suite with the barrel, the pan, the steel and the top jaw all faceted, three-quarter stock engraved with neo-Celtic patterns of interlace and spiral scrolls, enriched with silver inlay throughout, heightened with punched dots and bands of silver, ram's horn butt with vacant silver escutcheons, pierced engraved steel belt hook, silver button trigger and pricker engraved and punched as a flower heads (the prickers each probably an early working replacement) and original turned steel ramrod.

Lot Essay

Alexander Campbell of Doune, Perthshire, inherited the business from his father, John, in 1720 and succeeded in developing his reputaion as one of the finest gunmakers in the history of Doune.
