A PAIR OF FRENCH MODEL 1779 NAVAL OFFICER'S FLINTLOCK BELT PISTOLS BY DESAGA À TULLE
circa 1780-90
With three-stage barrels swamped at the muzzle, one stamped with the maker's signature 'Desaga' and the other 'a Tulle', long back-straps extending to the pommels, plain rounded locks, moulded figured walnut half-stocks each carved with a tulip head in relief behind the lock and the side-plate, the pommels formed as dog's heads carved in the round and inset with beaded iron eyes, plain iron mounts comprising rounded moulded side-plates fitted with belt hooks, long trigger plates extending over almost the full length of the stocks and also forming a barrel-band with fore-sight, moulded trigger-guards, and original iron ramrod.
