Verschuring went to Italy circa 1650 to complete his artistic education after spending some six years in Utrecht training under Jan Both. He spent a considerable length of time there, not returning to Holland until 1662. In his maturity he enjoyed great success as a painter of Italianate horse scenes and landscapes that made reference to his time in Italy. His cavalry and hunting scenes are compositionally less crowded than many of his contemporaries and often display an arrangement reminiscent of Wouwerman's: see for example that sold, Christie's, South Kensington, 27 October 1999, lot 177, or that sold, Sotheby's, London, 7 July 1999, lot 482.
