Lot Essay

Vertangen was a pupil of Cornelis van Poelenburgh, by whom he was greatly influenced, and whom he closely followed stylistically. His landscapes, of Arcadian landscapes stocked with nude or partly-nude figures representing Biblical or - as in the present work - mythological characters, tend not to have the deeply Italianised appearance of those of Poelenburgh.
