Lot Essay

The larger version of Fleeing Figure is recorded as T. Woollcombe (ed.), Kenneth Armitage Life and Work, Much Hadham, 1997, p. 129, no. KA216, another cast illustrated.

The artist wrote, 'In 1978 I had a touring exhibition in Japan. The two galleries I was most involved with in Japan were the powerful Fuji Television Gallery owned by Mr Shikenai (who also founded the first and largest open-air sculpture park at Hakone and acquired the whole collection), and the Excellent Gallery Kasahara in Osakara' (op.cit., p. 122).
