The title Pisang Rebus refers to a banana-based local dessert in Malaysia. The other inscriptions on the work which read "Serambi Tengah Rumah Ibu" could be translated to a reception/waiting area at the house of my mother and another "Terubuk Pekasam" is referring to a local fish "Terubuk" being cooked in the style of "Pekasam"
Pisang Rebus is part of a small body of recent works from various references and approaches from his past works which includes the narrative 'pop' elements as well as the textural play of his Mantera drawings and the interplay of different visual layers is a clear development from his most recent Wet Paint series. Despite the use of literal inscription and also the depiction of specific and familiar visual references that are tempting one to read the narratives of the composition, the artist, however is predominantly preoccupied with the process of creating and the breaking down the formal process of drawing and painting.
The simple description of the things depicted on the canvas will inevitably inspired a response from a viewer and this is the response that interests the artist as that response to the visual and the conceptual connotations of the subject could be as varied and diverse as the different individuals who look at the work and actually, do not correlate to the work itself, but nevertheless, remain an integral part for the audience.
With Pisang Rebus, the artist continues to use the structure of the Kampung house for his exploration of the ideas about positive and negative space, a motif which he has used in his other recent works too.
