A LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY SILVER TOBACCO RASP,
MARK OF "BC" over "98" ONLY, PERHAPS SCANDINAVIAN, CIRCA 1700,
The cylindrical silver case engraved to sides with heavily stylised stiff leafage, the pull-off cover engraved with a tulip to top & initials "M*C" to rim, maker's mark on base of case, inside cover & on base of tubular silver grater, 2 3/16 in. long (5.5 cm.).

Further details
One rarely encounters dates under makers' marks in England, even in the provinces however this is a common feature of Scandinavian marks, especially in Norway & Denmark. The "98" is probably the date the maker registered his mark (1698) & not necessarily the actual year of manufacture.
