A CHARLES II SILVER CHINOISERIE BEAKER,
MAKER'S MARK ONLY OF ANTHONY NELME (as or similar to Grimwade no.68), LONDON, CIRCA 1680,
The shape in the French manner, with tucked-in foot, chased with Chinese figures, foliage & architecture, clouds overhead, a wreath cartouche inscribed with date "1678", a crown above possibly of a later date, also a 19th Century crest featuring a snake & trophy of arrows, gilt interior, 3 1/8 in. high (7.7 cm.), 2.75 oz.

The maker's mark is presumably that referred to in Grimwade's biographical notes on Anthony Nelme (page 606) in which he writes "His first mark, pre 1697,has long been recognized from its resemblance to the two entered undated, presumably April 1697 on commencement of register". Nelme was free 16 January, 1679/80 & it is rare to see this type of chinoiserie after 1688 (see page 62, "The Collector's Dictionary of the Silver and Gold of Great Britain & North America"--Michael Clayton)
