We are grateful to Jan van Helmont for his assistance in identifying the sitter. Mr van Helmont considers that the inscription '·F·I·T' refers to François Joseph des Terms, who was a Knight of Malta, as shown by the robe, the coat-of-arms and his rosary of gilded glass with the cross. The rosary may also refer to the family business in blown glass.
