Lot Essay

We are grateful to Jan van Helmont for suggesting that the coat-of-arms on the left side of the panel is from Spain, more specifically Guipuzcoa (Basque country). He suggests that it is possible that the patron who commissioned the present panel was an as-yet unidentified Spanish nobleman who perhaps came to the Southern Netherlands as a courtier.
