Lot Essay

The present painting corresponds very closely in style, dimensions, shape and material to a pair of pictures of The Finding of Moses and Moses turning Water into Blood, both in a private collection, Milan (see A.G. De Marchi, in the exhibition catalogue, Pietra Dipinta, Milan, November 2000-February 2001, p. 100, no. 51). Andrea G. De Marchi confirms that unlike many of Tempesta's paintings on stone, both the present painting and the Milan pair are automonomous works of art that do not derive from any known print. He dates the paintings to the beginning of the seventeenth century.
