Hans Ittmann started his career as a sculptor in the studio of Zadkine. Soon after the war Hans Ittmann went to Paris on a scholarship from the French government and he remained there until 1948. He worked in a variety of materials and even before his arrival in Paris he had produced abstract work in which expressive forms drift like fragments of brightly coloured, collage like, on a background of saturated colours.

In 1951 he was invited to become a member of the artist group 'Creatie: de vereniging voor Absolute Abstractie', that was later transformed in the group 'Liga Nieuwe Beelden'. Around 1956 the work of Hans Ittmann 'kreeg steeds meer verwantschap met dat van de constructivisten Naum Gabo an Antoine Pevsner: zijn metalen draadplastieken werden tot ruimtelijke constructies (see:Exh. cat. Een nieuwe synthese, The Hague 1988, p.188)

During his life Ittmann realised many large sculptures in iron and metal related to architecture. For one of the P.T.T. buildings at Zuider-Amstel, Ittmann produced a large outside wall sculpture called, Ring van Möbius, that in form and material is much related to the present lot. He had a close relationship with Kunst en bedrijf, that supplied him with large commissions.
