A pair of Chinese blue and white Burghley House dishes, circa 1745
each painted in the well with a view of a large country house with a flag flying above the entrance and a terrace to one side, a large bird flying above and other birds perched on and by the trees in the foreground, with a stylised lingzhi fungus scroll around the cavetto, the rim with a baroque scrollwork border -- 8 7/8in. (22.5cm.) diam. (2)

Lot Essay

Though this imposing facade could represent a number of great 17th century houses, it has always been thought to be Burghley, both because of an English Delft prototype and because of the Chinese grisaille decorated punchbowl, circa 1735, illustrating the house and still in the collection there.
