Lot Essay

Compared with the number of silver objects from Amsterdam or The Hague, the number of silver objects from the city of Bois le Duc is limited. In 1985, during the preparations for the exhibition Zilver uit s-Hertogenbosch, only c. 1600 objects were listed (Exh.cat. Zilver uit s-Hertogenbosch, s-Hertogenbosch (Noordbrabants Museum), 1985, p. 105).

The interest in silver from the city arose fairly recently. The first monograph on Bois le Duc silver was F. Crooy: Les orfèvres de Bois-le-Duc et leurs poinçons, Brussels, 1938. In the 1960s and 1970s the interest in the subject grew tremendously thanks to the increasing interest in Brabant silver in general and a vast number of exhibitions dedicated to silver from individual Dutch towns, like for example Haarlem (1959), Rotterdam (1966) and Maastricht (1978) (Exh.cat. Zilver uit s-Hertogenbosch, op cit.).

A milestone in the study into Bois le Duc silver was the mentioned exhibition of 1985. The accompanying exhibition catalogue is considered a standard work. Fortunately the interest in silver from the city did not decrease in the years following 1985, as is shown for example by the fascinating contributions on the subject in the exhibition catalogue In Buscoducis, s-Hertogenbosch (Noordbrabants Museum), 1990.
