Rectangular, finely embossed and chased with the Presentation in the Temple (Luke 2:22-39), depicting Simeon handing back the infant Jesus to the kneeling Mary, on the left Joseph standing with the kneeling profetess Anna, on the right a man leaning against a column, signed and dated in stipples on the base of the left column, in later velvet mount

Lot Essay

Juriaen Pool born in 1618 in Schweinitz. Married in 1651 Magrieta Schots, who was the daughter of Geertruyt ter Meysen, who in her second marriage became the wife of Lucas Draef. Magrieta bore Pool a son called Juriaen, who became a painter and married Rachel Ruys, the famous painter of flowers.
Pool was a famous chaser and modeller with many pupils. As a medallist he made several historical medals between 1653 and 1667.
Only a few examples of his embossed work are extant. Only two signed plaquettes (see J.W. Frederiks, op. cit.).
