Lot Essay

This ormolu-mounted amaranth commode bears the distinctive feature of shaped side doors or encoignures, a particularity that is recurrent in the second quarter of the 18th Century. This is best illustrated in some of the commodes designed by the celebrated ébéniste Bernard II van Risen burgh (BVRB) including those for the Munich residence (see B. Langer, Die französischen Möbel des 18. Jahrhunderts, Munich, 1995, p.89). A related commode stamped by BVRB was sold at Chritie's, New York, 30 April 1999, lot 100. Magnificent commodes with related lateral doors or encoignures were also designed by another famed 18th Century ébéniste, Charles Cressent (1685-1768).
