This composition is known in numerous examples, both 16th century and later, as with the present bronze. It has often been associated with Girolamo Campagna (d. 1526?), but in his entry on the Ashmolean example, Warren (loc. cit.) follows Penny by saying that it must have come more generally from an artist under the influence of Sansovino.
