This very elegant bureau Mazarin harmoniously blends première partie and contre-partie Boulle marquetries (which mean marquetry on an ebony or tortoiseshell ground or marquetry on a metal ground). The design of the panels is especially delicate and closely relate to the engraving of the ornemanistes or designers such as Bérain. The unusual shape of the central element of the top relates to a pair of conformingly-shaped caskets from the Wildenstein Collection, sold Christie's, London, 14 December 2005, lot 9.
