Saint-Germain (1719-1791), son of the maître ébéniste Joseph de Saint-Germain, became one of the famed bronziers of the 18th century. He is recorded in the Almanach Général des Marchands in 1749 at the rue Saint-Nicolas in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine and was still working there in 1782.
A virtually identical clock also stamped by Saint-Germain and signed 'HENRY PADEVAL A PARIS' was sold, Christie's, London, 2 October 1991, lot 68, and a comparable clock also stamped by this bronzier was sold, Sotheby's, Paris, 9 December 2005, lot 66.
