Lot Essay

A nearly identical pair of jardinières is in the Palazzo Quirinale in Rome and is illustrated in A. González-Palacios, Il patrimonio artistico del Quirinale. I Mobili Italiani, Milan, 1996, pp.243-244. Interestingly, the bold caryatids which ornate these highly decorative jardinières relate to the oeuvre of Valadier and to a table in a private French collection illustrated in L'Estampille. L'Objet d'Art., November 1994, pp.26-27.
