The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex. New York: D. Appleton, 1876. 8° in 12s (196 x 123mm). 78 wood-engravings in text. (Half-title and title spotted, occasional spotting of text.) Original brown cloth decorated in black and gilt (somewhat soiled and rubbed). Provenance: presentation copy inscribed to 'Mrs Clarks with the author's affectionate regards. Ch. Darwin' -- Quentin Keynes (1921-2003, gift to his doctor).
PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY DARWIN. Both this and the preceding New York edition of 1875 were printed from stereotypes of the 1874 London second edition (Freeman 944), which included a note by Thomas Huxley on pp. 199-206. In writing his inscription hurriedly, Darwin may have slid into the posessive by adding an 's' to the the name 'Clark'. Correspondence does not include any 'Clarks' in the name register. But it is possible that Darwin gave the book to Barbara, daughter of the Rev. John Stephen, and in 1876 the widow of James Clark (1788-1870), physician to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and member of the Senate of London University, 1838-1865. Freeman 947.
