[ORAZIO GRASSI] 'GALEAZZO MARISCOTTO' (1590-1654)
De iride disputatio optica. Rome: Jacob Mascardi, 1617. 8° (197 x 148mm). Woodcut Jesuit device on title, 5 woodcut diagrams in text, woodcut head- and tailpieces, 2 large woodcut initials. Double-page engraved plate. (Slight spotting and marginal dampstaining.) Modern boards, titled on spine (lightly rubbed at extremities).
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF AN EARLY WORK ON THE RAINBOW and the refracting and reflective properties of light. The year following the publication, Grassi, mathematician of the Jesuit College in Rome, observed three comets and published an anonymous book, which was soon criticized by Galileo and Guiducci in lectures delivered to the Florentine Academy. In response, Grassi directly attacked Galileo in 1619, which then lead in 1623 to 'one of the most celebrated polemics in science' -- Il saggiatore (DSB V, p.243; see lot 68).
