'For it was the discovery of phosphorus that stimulated the research of Robert Boyle and his contemporaries into the nature of combustion, and marks the beginning of chemistry as a modern science' (Klingender, Art and the Industrial Revolution, p.54). Chaloner Smith, 'Pether' 44; Egerton 163; Le Blanc, 'Pether' 38.
