MARIE CURIE (1867-1934), PIERRE CURIE (1859-1906) AND GUSTAVE BÉMONT.
Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des séances de l'Académie des Sciences. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1898, volumes 126, n° 15, 127, n° 3 and 127, n° 26, containing:
- Marie CURIE. 'Rayons émis par les composés de l'uranium et du thorium', vol. 126 n°15 of 12 April, pp. 1101-03;
- Marie and Pierre CURIE. 'Sur une substance nouvelle radio-active, contenue dans la pechblende', vol. 127 n°3 of 18 July, pp.175-78;
- Marie and Pierre CURIE, and Gustave BÉMONT. 'Sur une nouvelle substance fortement radio-active, contenue dans la pechblende', vol. 127 n°26 of 26 December, pp.1215-17.
3 issues, 4° (285 x 227mm). Illustrations. (Titles browned, occasional spotting, deckle edges occasionally soiled.) Original printed wrappers, partly UNOPENED (wrappers worn, December issue disbound); modern cloth box.
THE DISCOVERY OF RADIUM AND POLONIUM: A RARE COMPLETE SET OF FIRST JOURNAL EDITIONS, detailing the progress of the Curies' experiments. After having reported that two uranium ores are much more active than uranium itself (first paper), the Curies managed to isolate two new 'radio-active' (a term coined by Curie) substances: polonium, named after Marie's native land, and radium (second and third papers, presented by H. Becquerel). The existence of radium was immediately confirmed by E. Demarçay, whose 'Sur le spectre d'une substance radio-active' is published in the December issue (p.1218). These issues of Comptes rendus include also contributions from many important researchers of the day, including Berthelot, Chauveau and Branly. Garrison-Morton 2003 (July and December issues only); Grolier Medicine 84B (December issue only); Norman 545 (December issue only); not in Waller, and ABPC records no copy of the April article and only one copy of the July article sold at auction for over 30 years.
