MARIE CURIE (1867-1934)
'La loi fondamentale de transformation des Radioéléments et les constantes radioactives'. Galley proofs, before publication in: Het Natuurkundig laboratorium der Rijksuniversiteit te Leiden in de jaren 1904-1922. [Leiden: E. IJdo, 1922]. 8° (241 x 151mm). 12 pages, 2 figures in text. (Occasional light marking.) Unbound. Provenance: Harvey B. Plotnick (for whom see lot 110; his sale, Christie's New York, 4 October 2002, lot 61)
THE GALLEY PROOFS OF MARIE CURIE'S PAPER CORRECTED THROUGHOUT BY HER OWN HAND. This article was contributed to a festschrift for the Dutch physicist Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (1853-1926), who had discovered superconductivity in 1911. In 1913, two years after Marie Curie's second prize, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his researches on the properties of matter at extremely low temperatures. He was one of Curie's most trusted and respected scientific colleagues; she had carried out a series of experiments with him investigating the radiations from radium at low temperatures, the results of which are discussed in this paper.
