Details
ALBERT EINSTEIN (1879-1955)
'Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie', offprint from: Annalen der Physik, series 4, volume 49 (1916). Leipzig: Omnitypie-Ges., successors to L. Zechnall for Johann Ambrosius Barth, '1916' [c. 1919]. 8° (232 x 151mm). Original printed tan wrappers (wrappers chipped and torn causing small losses).

EINSTEIN'S GENERAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY, SIGNED AND DATED ON THE UPPER WRAPPER 'A. EINSTEIN. (51)': 'the theory's impact upon twentieth-century science and thought can hardly be overstated' (Norman 695). Die Grundlage was first published in Annalen der Physik, and was then issued as an offprint in the present form with the addition of a table of contents on pp.3-5 and Einstein's 'Einleitung' on pp.5-6. SIGNED OFFPRINTS OF THIS KEY PAPER ARE RARE AT AUCTION: ABPC only records three other signed copies at auction since 1975 (and no inscribed copies). The present copy is a later issue of the first separate edition of the paper, with the Omnitypie imprint on the verso of the title and a publisher's advertisement on the lower wrapper which lists 5 titles published by Barth dated 1911 to 1919. Weil notes that there are 'several' anastatic reprints of the paper and that the Omnitypie issue 'is the better one'. BRL 78.1; Norman 696; Waller 11,331; Weil 80a.
