ALBERT EINSTEIN (1879-1955)
A group of 4 photographic portraits by Sanford Roth (1906-1962), gelatin silver prints (3 of them c.275 x c.345mm and one 248 x 200mm), one of these with the photographer's stamp on the reverse. Provenance: Sanford Roth -- Francesca Robinson Sanchez.

FOUR PORTRAITS OF EINSTEIN FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER'S OWN ARCHIVE, one of these published in Portraits of the Fifties. The Photographs of Sanford Roth (San Francisco and New York: c. 1987, p.33). Sanford Roth's wife, Beulah, recalls that Roth considered his meeting with Einstein 'one of the greatest moments of his life ... Before they began, I was told, Professor Einstein cautioned Sandy to take no more than six pictures. Three hours passed as [the cultural anthropologist Ashley] Montagu and Einstein had a lengthy discussion about nuclear power and the world ... Finally Einstein turned to Sandy and said, "Roth, you are a naughty boy. You took more than six!" "Yes, I did," said Sandy, "but Professor, you should know that in order to get six good ones I had to take one hundred." Sandy was expecting Einstein's wrath. Instead he got the response, "You are right, Roth. It figures mathematically."' (Portraits of the Fifties, p.xv).

Roth and his wife met, entertained and photographed many of the most notable personalities of post-World War Two Europe and America; Edwin Hubble, and Irène and Frédéric Joliet-Curie were among the scientists he photographed (see also lot 114). When Sanford Roth died in 1962, his wife Beulah transferred ownership of many of the original photographs to Francesca Robinson Sanchez, granddaughter of Edward G. Robinson, by whom this lot is offered.
