Lot Essay

cf. S. Day, Art Deco and Modernist Carpets, San Francisco, 2002, p. 132, no. 180 for an illustration of a comparable rug by Léger.

This carpet, probably titled, 'Brown', is most likely part of a series of carpets Léger produced for the Myrbor Gallery based on the principles of Purism. Resembling collages, their names were determined by the color of the grounds, White, Red, Green, etc.
