cf. K.-J. Sembach, Henry Van de Velde, New York, 1989, pp. 22 and 56 for illustrations of lithographs with variations on the text.
Henry Van de Velde, the Belgian architect and teacher, was considered to be one of the originators of the Art Nouveau style that swept Europe during the late 1890s. His only poster design was drawn in 1898 for the Tropon food company as part of a comprehensive design program that appeared on packages of powdered egg whites to advertisements and the company's stationary. This sinuous, abstracted remains today not only one of the most important works of Van de Velde's career but an icon of the Art Nouveau style. Van de Velde moved to Germany in 1907 and helped found the Deutsche Werkbund and he later became the first director of the legendary Bauhaus.
