Paul Theodore Frankl (1886-1962)
Frankl was born in Vienna, Austria andis regarded today as one of the pioneers of Modern design in America before 1925. Immigrating to American in 1914, Frankl set up his own business in New York City on East 48th Street which sold numerous examples of his furniture as well as imported textiles and objects d'art. He wrote a number of influential books during the 20s and early 30s inclding: New Dimensions, Form and Re-Form and Space for Living. In 1926 he introduced his iconic "skyscraper" furniture which was inspired by the new architecture of New York City; he then embraced custom metal furnishings during the 1930s.
