Lot Essay

The Roman-shield backs of the English patterned chairs have feathered splats tied in a double bow, which almost certainly derive from chairs in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence that were supplied in 1797 by Giovacchino Paoli and are likely to have been inspired by feathered back chairs in Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 3rd ed. 1794 (E. Colle ed., I Mobili di Palazzo Pitti, 1737-1799, Florence, 1992, no. 126).
