Lot Essay

The demi-medallion tops mosaic-inlay displays an Apollo sunflowered compartment festooned with laurels and wreathed by a palm-flowered ribbon-guilloche. It reflects the George III Roman fashion promoted by the court architect Robert Adam (d.1796), and relates in particular to a 1774 pattern for a pier-commode-table in, The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam, 1777, vol II pl.8).

The reeded leg, entwined like Caducean serpents, also features on a pier-table in the Museo Correale, Turin (A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Mobile nei Secoli, vol. III).
