Lot Essay

The Louis XVI patterned perfume-burner tazzae are incorporated in altar-tripods, whose vine-wreathed ram monopodiae evoke triumphs of the harvest-deity Bacchus and are attended by infant satyr. This pattern of chimney-piece garniture was popularised by those lent in the 1870s from Sir Richard Wallaces Hertford House collection for display at the South Kensington Museums exhibition held at Bethnal Green (P. Hughes, The Wallace Collection; Catalogue of Furniture, III, London 1996, no.276).
