Of domed rectangular shape, the hinged lid centred with a cartouche depicting a reclining Godess, above a moulded edge decorated with scrolling foliage and trellis, the inside lacquered with simulated aventurine, losses to the decoration

Lot Essay

This casket was probably conceived as a wig box. The simulated tortoiseshell decoration is inspired not only by the 17th Century Flemish caskets but also by the work of the cabinet maker André-Charles Boulle, who widely used the tortoiseshell on his pieces of furniture.
