Lot Essay

Vases of this form were initially decorated with lustred grounds and gilt with elaborate arabesques, as with the present lot, and subsequently the decoration for this form developed to incorporate other elements. Another very similar pair of Violetter Lüsterfond vases with gilt arabesques are in the Museum für angewandte Kunst, Vienna (Inv. Nr. Ke 7788), one of which is illustrated by Wilhelm Mrazek and Waltraud Neuwirth, 'Wiener Porzellan 1718-1864' Catalogue (Vienna, 1970), pl. 82, fig. 606. A pair of slightly later vases (1799) with pinkish-beige grounds, coloured vine garlands and grisaille winged putti, are in the Palazzo Pitti, one of which is illustrated by Shiela K. Tabakoff, 'The Viennese Porcelain at Palazzo Pitti' Catalogue (Florence, 2002), p. 127, no. 65.
