A RELIEF CARVED GILTWOOD AND BONE RELIQUARY CROSS
PROBABLY NETHERLANDISH, 17TH CENTURY
Carved to the front with the crucified Christ abobve the weeping Virgin, the reverse with the instruments of the passion, the base of the cross with a sliding bone panel, which once removed allows the back of the cross to be removed revealing a red silk lined interior with gilt embroidery, a blued steel nail, two pipe-clay groups of the Virgin and child and numerous small paper scrolls with inscriptions
