Lot Essay

In November 1783, Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes became the first people to take part in a manned balloon flight. Their air balloon was constructed in 1782 by Joseph Michel Montgolfier and his brother Jacques Etienne Montgolfier, and was lifted by lighting a couldren of paper beneath it.
