Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737-1832) was born in Annapolis, Maryland. He attended college in Paris and returned to Maryland and married Elizabeth Brook in 1757; after her death in 1761, he married Mary Darnall in 1768. He was appointed to Congress in 1776 and was the only Roman Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence, eventually outliving all other signers before his death in 1832.
