Of typical form, with a pierced keyhole handle, the handle engraved 1753 and S over R*S, the reverse of handle and shoulder engraved with a later inscription, marked on shoulder

Lot Essay

The initials are most likely for Richard and Sarah (Sears) Smith of Smithtown, Long Island. Richard Smith was one of Pelletreau's best customers and bought eight tankards in 1763. (Dean Failey, Elias Pelletreau: Long Island Silversmith, master's thesis, University of Delaware, 1971).
