From I. S. and M.C.S This was a present from Gerard Sparks, the historian and President of Harvard College and his wife Mary Crowninshield Sparks to her brother Nathaniel Silsbee, for his work in settling the estate of Hon. N. Silsbee, the Senator, who was the father of Nathaniel Silsbee and Mary Crowninshield Sparks. The tradition is that this was made from old Silsbee silver
