Thos. Barnard DD. Purchased AD 1805. The gift of Mrs. Johanna Ward," marked under base, covers apparently unmarked

Lot Essay

The donor of these canns, Johanna (Chipman) Ward, was the second wife of William Ward (1761-1827), a China trade merchant and master mariner. They married in 1790 and their home on Essex Street, now called the Bowditch House, is a National Historic Landmark.
