The frame engraved with paterae and foliage, the horizontal bar with central lion mask flanked to the angles by convex bosses and engraved with maker's name, the four-bar grate surmounted by urn finials and with pierced fret

Lot Essay

A register grate by George Binns, of Dame Street, Dublin, is illustrated in The Fashionable Fireplace, Temple Newsam House Exhibition, Leeds, 1985, p.23. Two similar Irish brass register grates with were sold Newton Park House, Co.Dublin, Christie's/Hamilton & Hamilton, 20 September 1976, lots 23 and 112, engraved respectively with maker's names Mason, Dublin and Jno. & Jno. Clarke, Dublin. Another sold, lot 229, The Nigel Bartlett Collection, Christie's, 14 September 2005.
