The chair back is blazoned as a Wolf's Head erased Erminois, the crest of the Hankey Family.
The arms were granted in 1723 to Henry Hankey, Citizen and Haberdasher of London, and were to be used by all male-line descendents of his father, Mr Thomas Hankey of Chester. Henry subsequently became Sir Henry Hankey, Alderman of the city of London, head of a banking house in Fenchurch Street, Master of the Haberdashers' Company in 1728-29, and Sheriff of the City in 1732-33.
