A six-part box-form coloured peep view showing three views of the river and the two tunnels, on the reverse a hand-written inscription Baptista - from Aunt Hannah, 1851; a four-part coloured peep view by Azulay bound into book form, with a printed description of the tunnel and the three 'irruptions' that preceded its completion. Lot Essay

Work began on The Thames Tunnel, which was designed by Marc Isambard Brunel and ran from Rotherhithe to Wapping, in 1825 but was only completed in 1843 after many interruptions. With its long perspectives it was an ideal subject for a peep view.
